Starting with the WHAT..
Back in the 1970’s there was an explosion of housing property developments in the USA involving the simultaneous building of a golf course. This was the concept with the Abbey and in the early 80’s the golf course and houses running through the middle of the course were built.
Unlike similar developments though, the golf course architect Donald Steel was asked to lay out the whole site, effectively determining where the houses would be built. This having two significant benefits; firstly that the golf course is a very good layout, with 18 excellent golf holes, and secondly that the houses get hit very infrequently from errant tee shots.
By 1986 the original clubhouse had been re-located to the position the Hotel is now in and the first 32 bedrooms were built. Subsequently, a gym and swimming pool were added in 1988.
Both the original developer and the subsequent owners went out of business, and so it happened in February 1998, that the Blake family, owners of Lea Marston Hotel, near Sutton Coldfield came to successfully bid for the “Abbey Park Hotel and Golf Club”, as it was then known.
At this time (1998 to 2001) the newly renamed Abbey Hotel went through an extensive refurbishment programme and planning consent was obtained to build at one end a new Golf Centre and Health Club, and at the other a new Conference and Banqueting Centre. These opened in May 2002.
Then started a considerable project to overhaul the Golf Course which included installing drainage to fairways and building many new tees and bunkers. In 2006 the latest bedroom extension was completed bringing the total number of bedrooms to 100. Not surprisingly in 2009 work started to renovate many of the older bedrooms and bathrooms. This is expected to run through to 2012 at which time it is hoped one or two new exciting projects will commence. Now for the WHO..
This is a family business, and despite going from a mere 22 staff in 1998 to well over a hundred today the values of the Management and Staff remain the same: All staff fully engaged in delivering excellent service to all customers. This may be evidenced by talking to the General Manager John Hindson who was appointed by the then MD Mark Blake in April 1998. "As the property has grown, our key objectives are in the training of our staff and the development of our product, all with the sole aim of ensuring a guest stay is to their satisfaction on every occassion" (John Hindson). Other senior team members that have joined since then include:
